About the Computing Department

Our Teaching

At Lancaster, we offer a range of distinctive courses all with the following characteristics:

Practical
We believe strongly in computing as a practical subject, and aim to develop students with strong skills in systems design and programming.
Research led
We adopt a research-led approach to our teaching whereby courses are continuously upgraded to reflect recent developments in the subject and also students get the chance to work with internationally renowned research teams in project work. Our courses are shaped by our research strengths with emphasis on key research areas such as communications and distributed systems, software systems engineering and HCI.
We emphasise the fundamental principles underpinning contemporary computer systems.
Transferable skills
Practical transferable skills necessary for working within team-based, professional environments

Innovation in Teaching

As well as being innovative in research, we also believe in being innovative in our teaching. For example, we have experimented with novel styles of formative assessment in our part I programming and part II software design courses. We have also received university awards for our interactive lab-based teaching style adopted in Part I courses.

Leading Teaching Experts

At Lancaster, you will also be taught by leading experts in the field often using text-books written by members of the department. For example, Professor Dix is an authos of a leading text book in HCI.
